Other information:

Falls are the most common cause of accidental injury to older people in the UK, and constitute 62% of injuries causing fatalities in older people.  East Sussex has the highest percentage of elderly residents of any county in England (including the 3 categories of over 75, over 85 and over 90 years of age). In 2013/14, 3520 East Sussex residents were admitted to hospital due to a fall; of these patients, 3018 were 65 or over.

The East Sussex falls and secondary fracture prevention programme aims to:

·         reduce the likelihood and severity of falls, prevent frailty and promote bone health

·         provide early intervention to maintain or restore individuals’ independence, confidence and quality of life following a fall

·         facilitate early diagnosis and management of bone fragility for residents who present with fragility fractures in order to prevent secondary fracture

·         reduce the number of East Sussex residents who, as a consequence of a fall and/or fragility fracture are:

o   Treated by the ambulance service

o   Conveyed to hospital by ambulance

o   Treated within hospital

o   Admitted to hospital

o   Prematurely admitted to long term care

The group will meet quarterly. The VCS is represented by ESDA and AgeUK East Sussex on this partnership.
